PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A veteran congressman on trial in a racketeering case ran a "white-collar crime spree" that stretched from Philadelphia to Washington, a prosecutor told jurors Monday.

U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah, an 11-term Democrat from Philadelphia, is accused of taking an illegal $1 million campaign loan from a friend to fund a failed 2007 mayoral bid and using a federal grant to repay most of it.

Federal Joyce probe reaches into state House with subpoena

BOSTON – U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Carmen Ortiz subpoenaed records from the Massachusetts House of Representatives as part of an investigation into whether state Sen. Brian Joyce, a Milton Democrat, illegally used his office to bolster his law practice, House officials confirmed on Monday.

Joyce has denied all wrongdoing, and earlier this year announced he wouldn't seek re-election to the Senate> But since that time, federal prosecutors have delivered subpoenas to the state Senate and local government officials as part of their probe, which included a raid of Joyce's Canton law offices. Joyce has been under a cloud of suspicion following multiple reports in the Boston Globe questioning the Senate veteran's ethics, use of campaign funds and other questionable activities.
