Tunisia battles extremists near Libyan border

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — Exceptionally deadly clashes between Tunisian forces and extremist attackers left at least 53 people dead Monday near Tunisia's border with Libya, the government said, amid growing fears that violence from Libya could destabilize the whole region.

Gunmen attacked the city of Ben Guerdane at dawn Monday and fighting continued past nightfall. Tunisia closed its border with Libya and the Tunisian interior and defense ministers traveled to the town to oversee the operation, according to a joint statement from their ministries.

T fares to rise 9% as board votes for highest option

BOSTON – Over the objections of protesters, the board that oversees the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority voted to boost fares by an average of about 9 percent, effective July 1.

Meeting Monday afternoon, members of the T's Fiscal and Management Control Board – appointed by Republican Gov. Charlie Baker – voted amid the chants of angry protesters who opposed the fare hikes. The increases are expected to generate $42 million in additional revenue in fiscal 2017.
