MBTA inventory system ‘completely broken,’ official says

Describing a dysfunctional MBTA inventory system that does not meet industry standards, transit authority officials and a consultant made the case Monday to outsource the operations.

"We have a completely broken system," MBTA Chief Procurement Officer Gerard Polcari told reporters Monday ahead of an MBTA Fiscal and Management Control Board meeting. He said the problems was "decades" in the making and outsourcing would be a "game-changer."

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The last of the bodies were removed from an Orlando gay nightclub overnight as investigators dug into the background of the gunman, who called 911 to profess allegiance to the Islamic State during the attack that left 49 victims dead.

At the White House, President Barack Obama said Monday there is no clear evidence so far that gunman Omar Mateen was directed by the extremist group. He said Mateen was inspired by radical information over the internet, calling it another apparent example of "homegrown extremism."
