Mass. public health chief mum on raising tobacco age

STATE HOUSE — Speaking to advocates visiting Beacon Hill to promote cancer prevention, Massachusetts Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel said Thursday that more needs to be done prevent young people from using tobacco, but stopped short of endorsing a bill that calls for raising the tobacco purchasing age in Massachusetts from 18 to 21.

Bharel spoke after a several lawmakers, including Sen. Jason Lewis and Rep. Kate Hogan, – co-chairs of the Joint Committee on Public Health – touted a bill (S 2152) recommended by their panel last week and sent to the Senate Committee on Ways and Means.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Hillary Clinton wants stricter rules on auto imports than the Obama administration negotiated in a sweeping Pacific trade deal that's a major priority for the White House.

Under the Trans-Pacific Partnership, automobiles could be imported tax-free into the U.S. even if most parts in those vehicles were made in countries that are not in the trade alliance.
