A Springfield resident, Emilio Garcia-Cappas, 27, has been arrested on charges in connection with fentanyl trafficking.
Garcia-Cappas has been indicted on one count of conspiring to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl and another count of distributing and possession with intent to distribute the same substance. Following his arrest late last week, Garcia-Cappas appeared in federal court in Springfield and was detained pending a later hearing, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts.
Prosecutors say Garcia-Cappas possessed and distributed fentanyl in February 2024.
The charge of conspiring to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl carries a penalty (if convicted) of at least five years to up to 40 years in prison, with at least four years of supervised release and a fine of up to $2 million. The charge of distributing and possessing fentanyl with intent to distribute (if convicted) carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison, up to three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $1 million.
