Columbia Gas Company of Massachusetts sought a rate hike totaling $44.5 million for safety measures this past spring but made do with $11 million less after the Massachusetts Attorney General's office got involved.

Complying with state and federal safety regulations was causing a deficit in operating and maintenance for the utility, company president Stephen H. Bryant told the state Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities in April, according to Boston Business Journal.
