UN chief to make visit amid Israel-Palestinian tensions

JERUSALEM (AP) — U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will make a surprise visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories on Tuesday, in a high-profile gambit to bring an end to the monthlong wave of violence that has plagued the region.

The visit comes amid unrest that erupted in Jerusalem a month ago over tensions surrounding a Jerusalem holy site sacred to Jews and Muslims. It soon spread to Arab neighborhoods of east Jerusalem and then to the West Bank, Gaza and Israel. The spate of daily attacks have caused panic across Israel and raised fears that the region is on the cusp of a new round of heavy violence.

PLAINFIELD, N.H. (AP) — Officials are confident they can finally unload two properties formerly owned by a now-jailed pair of tax evaders, including the compound where they kept federal agents at bay during a monthslong armed standoff, despite lingering concerns the place is booby-trapped.

An auction last year for Ed and Elaine Brown's properties drew no bidders, but much has changed ahead of this year's attempt, set for Thursday at the federal courthouse in Concord.
