UMass Medical School Wants Name of Plantation Street In Worcester Changed

The state's public medical school is asking the Worcester City Council to change the name of three public streets near the campus because they contain the word "Plantation."

The word 'Plantation' connotes oppression in our country and serves as a reminder of the painful history of slavery in America," states a petition submitted to the city on behalf of the chancellor of UMass Chan Medical School, Michael F. Collins, according to the city council agenda published online.

Vermont state legislators have given up on a policy that recommended proof of vaccination or screening for coronavirus before entering the Vermont State House because no one has been following it.

The old policy, approved in December 2021, "strongly recommended" members of the public to "provide proof of fully protected vaccination" or to "perform a rapid COVID-19 test provided by the General Assembly."
