President Donald Trump attended a service at Washington National Cathedral on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, during which the Episcopal bishop of Washington, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, asked Trump “to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared right now” – including, she said, “gay, lesbian, and transgender children” and illegal immigrants. Trump responded briefly in answer to a reporter’s question outside the cathedral about what he thought of the service:
“Not too exciting, was it? I didn’t think it was a good service. … They can do much better.”
