The recent city auditor of Holyoke, Massachusetts resigned, saying in an email message he didn't want to deal with "all the nonsense" from the city treasurer and mayor and suggesting that the city should seek state receivership.
Remaining city officials dispute that suggestion, but Mayor Alex B. Morse welcomes intervention by the state auditor, in part because of a less-than-$10,000 wire transfer the city treasurer made to a scam artist eight months ago.
But a judge in Nashua, New Hampshire hasn't ruled yet on whether the woman can remain anonymous, which is what she wants. The legal problem is that she signed the back of the ticket after the winning number was announced in January.
"She doesn't want to be a celebrity," said the apparent Powerball winner's lawyer, according to The Union Leader — but a state attorney general's office lawyer said, "The lottery thrives on transparency."
