Massachusetts state Representative Carol Doherty (D-Taunton) died on Saturday, February 15, after a battle with pancreatic cancer, according to her office.
Doherty had represented the Third Bristol District since July 2020; the district includes parts of the city of Taunton (Ward 1 Precincts A, B, Ward 2, Ward 5, Ward 7 and Ward 8) and the town of Easton (Precinct 4A, 5, and 6), both of Bristol County.
A Taunton resident since 1965, Doherty was deeply involved in the community. She taught at Bennett Elementary School in Taunton in the 1970s and served as a guidance counselor; she was also president of the Massachusetts Teachers Association in the early 1980s, a five-term member of the Taunton School Committee, and a co-host of the Silver City Meetinghouse weekly radio program on WVBF (AM station in Taunton), among other activities, according to her bio on the Massachusetts legislature's web site.
