Springfield city officials can't ask people about their immigration status and Springfield police can't cooperate with federal immigration authorities unless they have a warrant under a new local ordinance approved by the city council.
The council overrode a veto by Mayor Domenic Sarno on Monday night, enacting the so-called "Welcoming Community Trust Ordinance."
About 100 Massachusetts state troopers will wear a body camera over the next six months as part of a pilot program, according to State House News Service.
The announcement comes in the wake of scandals last year, including the revelation that some state troopers had been paid for overtime shifts they didn't work and that a confessed former drug dealer and money launderer had been hired as a state trooper.
