Retired Cop Shoots Trespasser Wanted on Burglary Charge

A retired Worcester cop shot and wounded a 29-year-old man he found in his yard in the middle of the night, police said.

The 56-year-old man came upon the intruder between midnight and 1 a.m. Sunday. When he tried to escort him off the property, a fight ensued, and when the intruder threatened to shoot the homeowner, the homeowner shot him, according to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

David Quinn, 24, a first sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, was killed on an island in the Pacific in 1943 during a bloody battle with the Japanese.

His family was told his body was lost at sea, but many years later his nephew came across a letter to Quinn's widow from a fellow Marine saying that Quinn's body had been buried on a beach underneath a white cross.
