Plymouth County DA Paid $2.4 Million in Public Funds To Private Law Firm

Timothy Cruz, a Republican, eventually settled a wrongful-termination lawsuit against the Plymouth County District Attorney's office by a former prosecutor for $248,000. Along the way his office paid about $2.4 million to Mintz Levin, a high-priced private law firm in Boston, instead of relying on the Massachusetts Attorney General's office, which would have represented his office free of charge.

A hearing officer in Swansea, Massachusetts found a former Swansea School Committee member responsible for three of four citations the local fire chief issued against him for a September protest against several members of the New England Patriots kneeing during the national anthem. The man invited members of the public to come burn a Patriots jersey on his property; he is appealing the hearing finding to a regional housing court in Fall River.
