Opposition To Activist Judge Stems from Anti-Homosexual Bigotry, State Rep Says

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy has nominated as chief justice of the state supreme court a homosexual man who current sits on the court. A Republican candidate for governor is criticizing the choice, saying that the judge, Andrew McDonald, frequently disregards the constitution in rulings, and noting that as a state senator in 2009 McDonald sponsored a bill that would have stripped bishops and pastors from financial control of Roman Catholic parishes; a Democratic state representative says criticisms of McDonald are rooted in bigotry.

Some members of the city council of Bridgeport, Connecticut says the mayor's campaign should reimburse the city for the cost of his full-time police detective driver, who has been driving the mayor all over the state while he campaigns for governor. Joe Ganim, a Democrat, is the mayor of Bridgeport, a job he also had from 1991 to 2003; in between, he served seven years in federal prison on racketeering, extortion, and bribery counts, among others.
