North Korea claims to have detonated first hydrogen bomb

(CNSNews.com) – North Korea announced Wednesday that it has successfully conducted a test of a miniaturized hydrogen device, after the U.S. Geological Survey reported a 5.1 magnitude "quake" within miles of the site where the Stalinist regime has carried out three previous nuclear weapons tests.

Seoul's Yonhap news agency said South Korean President Park Geun-hye had called an urgent National Security Council meeting to discuss the development.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Soon after the ground shook around its nuclear testing facility, North Korea trumpeted its first hydrogen bomb test — a self-proclaimed "H-bomb of justice" that would mark a major and unanticipated advance for its still-limited nuclear arsenal.

The announcement Wednesday by the defiant, impoverished country was met with widespread skepticism, as well as a strong condemnation by the U.N. Security Council, which said it would begin work on a resolution for new international sanctions.
