Mayor Vetoes Plastic Bag Ban

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza initially supported a ban of single-use plastic bags used in supermarkets and stores, but he vetoed a measure approved by the city council after the city's Racial and Environmental Justice Committee expressed concerns that it would hurt poor people.
The ordinance would ban single-use plastic bags and require retailers to charge at least 10 cent apiece for other types of bags, according to the Providence Journal.
