Inmates in state prisons and county jails in Massachusetts are set to be able to make free telephone calls starting Friday, December 1.
Governor Maura Healey has signed into law a bill requiring corrections officials to provide inmates "with voice communication services, including phone calls, free of charge to the person initiating and the person receiving the communication."
Maine may need a new telephone area code in the near future.
Known for 207, the only area code in the state, Maine is expected to eventually run out of 207 numbers. That would force the state to use another area code — one that has not yet been revealed.
