The Worcester City Council voted 9-2 on Tuesday to make itself that.

The city of about 208,000 people, located 40 miles west of Boston, took that action council members listened to what media outlets described as three hours of profanity-laced public comment.

“The City of Worcester as a sanctuary city will not cooperate with Federal and State on policies aimed to harm transgender and gender diverse people and ensure transgender and gender diverse people have access to healthcare, housing, education, and employment without fear or discrimination,” the resolution, suggested to the council by Queer Residents of Worcester organizer Allie Cislo, said.
