Legislature Considering Civics Requirement To Graduate

Massachusetts students would have to participate in two student-led civics projects to graduate from high school under legislation state lawmakers are considering.

American and local history, the U.S. Constitution, the Massachusetts Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the roles and responsibilities of citizens, flag etiquette, the development of skills to "analyze and evaluate media," "knowledge of the ways in which civic participation has been restricted throughout history," and "opportunities to identify and debate issues relative to power, economic status and the common good in democracy" are among the topics that would be taught, according to Senate Bill 2306.
