How GE’s new Boston home went from cold to hot

BOSTON (AP) — Before it became a boomtown, Boston's Seaport District — soon the new home of General Electric's global headquarters — was a dreary backwater.

Derided for decades as a soulless and barren wasteland, the eastern district on the waterfront long was filled with docks, warehouses and sprawling lots offering cheap parking for commuters. Today, it's undisputedly the city's hottest and fastest-growing neighborhood.

Obama administration will announce halt on new coal leases

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration will announce a moratorium Friday on any major new coal leases on federal lands until it completes a comprehensive review of whether the fees charged to mining companies provide a fair return to American taxpayers and reflect coal's impact on the environment.

An administration official says companies will continue to be able to mine the coal reserves already under lease. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the plan hasn't yet been formally announced.
