Massachusetts residents will have a chance to see the Harvest Moon this weekend.

The September full moon will reach peak illumination on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 12:49 p.m. Eastern Time. Since the moon will not be visible from Massachusetts at that time, the best chance to see it will come Saturday evening when it rises over the eastern horizon.

The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the start of fall. It has long been associated with the beginning of autumn, farming and the fall harvest.

What Time Will The Harvest Moon Rise In Massachusetts?

The moon will rise shortly after 6 p.m. across Massachusetts on Saturday, September 26.

In Boston, moonrise will occur at about 6:21 p.m. People farther west in Massachusetts will see the moon rise a few minutes later.

Anyone who wants to see the Harvest Moon close to the horizon should start looking east shortly after 6 p.m. The exact time will vary depending on location and whether hills, trees or buildings block the horizon.

The moon should remain visible throughout the night if skies are clear.

Why Is It Called The Harvest Moon?

The Harvest Moon is not a special type of moon. The name goes to whichever full moon occurs closest to the autumnal equinox.

In 2026, the autumnal equinox occurs on September 22. That makes the September 26 full moon the Harvest Moon.

The name dates back to the time before electric lighting. Farmers could use the bright moonlight after sunset to continue harvesting crops into the evening.

There is also an astronomical reason the Harvest Moon became useful to farmers.

Around the fall equinox, the moon rises at similar times for several nights in a row in the Northern Hemisphere. That means there is less darkness between sunset and moonrise than there normally would be.

Will The Harvest Moon Look Orange In Massachusetts?

The Harvest Moon may appear yellow, orange or reddish when it first rises.

The color does not come from anything unusual happening to the moon. When the moon sits close to the horizon, its light travels through more of Earth's atmosphere before reaching people on the ground.

The atmosphere scatters more of the shorter wavelengths of light. That can leave the moon looking orange or red, much like the colors seen around sunrise and sunset.

The moon will usually look whiter as it gets higher in the sky.

Will The Harvest Moon Look Bigger Than Normal?

The Harvest Moon may look especially large when it first rises.

Much of that comes from what is known as the moon illusion. The moon can appear larger when it is close to the horizon and people can compare it with trees, houses, buildings and other objects.

Its actual apparent size does not suddenly increase because it is the Harvest Moon.

The period shortly after moonrise can still be one of the best times to photograph it because the low moon can be seen alongside the landscape.

Where Is The Best Place To See The Harvest Moon In Massachusetts?

People do not need a telescope or any special equipment to see the Harvest Moon.

An open area with a clear view toward the eastern horizon will offer the best view when the moon rises Saturday evening.

Massachusetts beaches can be especially good viewing spots because the ocean can provide a relatively unobstructed view toward the east. Open fields, hilltops
