End of a Gambling Era in Newport
Newport Grand, which began life as a jai alai fronton (or court) in 1976 and then switched to slot machines and casino life in 2003, closed for good late Tuesday night.
The company that owns it is now operating a "convenience casino" with 1,000 slot machines, 32 table games, five restaurants, and a hotel in Tiverton, Rhode Island, which is about 15 miles northeast of Newport, on the mainland.
