A snowy owl in Rye, New Hampshire has attracted watchers, including some who throw things at it to get the owl to fly so they can get a good photo. Bothering wildlife is illegal in New Hampshire, and the police chief said handing out tickets for such behavior is one option.

Canadians are giving up their so-called "salvage rights" to a portion of the last herring smokehouse in the United States, which during a storm earlier this month blew off its pilings in Lubec, Maine across the water to Campobello Island, which is in New Brunswick in Canada. Some Canadians went at the shack with chainsaws, treating it as driftwood, leading a Lubec selectman who is head of the nonprofit group trying to restore the shack to call them "vandals"; but the Lubec woman has since apologized, and more history-accommodating heads on the New Brunswick side have apparently prevailed — contractors are working out the details of taking it back to Lubec.
