Connecticut Hospitals Pay More in State Tax Than They Make in Profit

The 28 hospitals in Connecticut made a collective total surplus in fiscal year 2016 of $353 million, but a state tax on health care totaled $438 million. The state's Democratic governor, Dannel Malloy, thinks the hospitals should pay more.

Joe Ganim, the mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut's biggest city, was visiting a home when someone fired shots from a moving car. The mayor was not wounded, and neither was anybody else, and the police detective who serves as his driver hustled him to the car.
