Cardinal Sean O’Malley Authorizes Special Collection For Maui Fires In Archdiocese of Boston

Cardinal Sean O'Malley, the archbishop of Boston, has authorized a special church collection to provide relief for those suffering in Maui due to fires.

"Recognizing the immediate and growing need for assistance, Cardinal Seán has asked that a special collection be taken in all parishes in the Archdiocese of Boston to support Church relief efforts in the Diocese of Honolulu," the Archdiocese of Boston said in a written statement on Thursday.

Suicides ticked upward in Massachusetts last year; 626 people died by suicide in the Bay State in 2022, according to preliminary data from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It marked a 3.6 percent increase over the previous year. However, the upward tick came after a period of decline. Suicides peaked at 740 in Massachusetts in 2018.
