McCurdy's Smokehouse, the last traditional smoked-herring facility in the United States, was torn from its moorings in Lubec, Maine during a storm January 4 and washed onto Campobello Island in New Brunswick, which is a province in Canada. Canadian authorities are refusing to allow Lubec Landmarks, a nonprofit organization that has spent 25 years restoring the smokehouse, to come get it, because some would-be Canadian scavengers are claiming "salvage" rights.
