U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch thinks there's still room for a "moderate Democrat" brand of politics in Washington, D.C., he told NBC reporter Matt Prichard during [an "@ Issue" talk show segment](https://www.nbcboston.com/news/local/issue-mass-congressman-stephen-lynch-faces-democratic-primary-challenge/3990534/?ref=newbostonpost.com) Sunday.

"And I think there has to be. We have failed to capture the middle, right? The moderates. Moderate Republicans, moderate Independents, moderate Democrats. The party has swung many times too far left. That's what put Trump into office. I think the Democratic Party \[has\] traditionally represented working class people, that center in our country. That's what I represent," Lynch, who has been in office since 2001, said. "You've got extreme left and extreme right in Congress — I try to be the bridge."

Lynch faces a primary challenger in lawyer Patrick Roath, who released a [six-figure ad buy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KagDhHbrNa4&ref=newbostonpost.com) on July 22 in which he says Lynch is "not a bad guy, but he's not the leader we need right now."

Asked about Roath's characterization of him, Lynch said, "He grew up in Connecticut. One thing I'll give him credit for is he chose his parents well. I don't think there could be a greater contrast between two candidates than the work that I do and the work that he's done in the past 10 years, you know, working for private equity firms."

Roath's most recent role was as associate for Ropes & Gray LLP in Greater Boston, per his LinkedIn.

His campaign [recently bashed](https://www.statehousenews.com/pr/lynch-campaign-says-it-has-never-been-powered-by-big-money-he-s-taken-millions/article%5Feb56584b-3070-55d1-bff5-fa07397613a3.html?ref=newbostonpost.com) Lynch for accepting money from corporate and business PACs during his time in Congress, referring to an Instagram post in which Lynch wrote that his campaign is "powered by people."

The two Democrats are slated to join a League of Women Voters of Hingham-hosted [candidate forum](https://my.lwv.org/massachusetts/hingham/event/8th-congressional-district-democratic-primary-candidate-forum?ref=newbostonpost.com) Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. at Weymouth's Chapman Middle School.
