Violet Wedick, who plays forward for South Portland, has at least seven goals this season. Wedick scored three goals in South Portland’s 7-0 season-opening win over Portland, the organization HeCheated.org [reported in a Sept. 16 X thread](https://x.com/hecheateddotorg/status/2100431244756463703?ref=newbostonpost.com). Wedick also scored two goals in a 6-0 win over Massabesic, a game that NewBostonPost [watched](https://fan.hudl.com/usa/me/south-portland/organization/5201/south-portland-high-school/team/813678/girls-varsity-soccer/schedule?date=2026-09-01T04%3A00%3A00.000Z&range=Month&s=U2NoZWR1bGVFbnRyeVB1YmxpY1N1bW1hcnk2YTU1M2M4NmEwMWJlZWQzMmZlYTc0N2M%3D&ss=2026&ref=newbostonpost.com). Additionally, Wedick scored [both goals](https://x.com/search?q=from%3A%40SPREDRIOTS%20Wedick&src=typed%5Fquery&ref=newbostonpost.com) in a 2-0 win over Gorham on Sept. 15. South Portland is 4-1 this season and has outscored its opponents 19-5, the [school’s athletics page](https://www.southportlandathletics.org/teams/13718?ref=newbostonpost.com) shows. So far, South Portland has beaten Portland 7-0, lost to Kennebunk 3-1, defeated Massabesic 6-0, bested Gorham 2-0, and topped Thornton Academy 3-2. It's unclear if Wedick scored against Kennebunk or Thornton Academy. HeCheated.org said Wedick has played club soccer for the South Portland Strikers since 2021. It also said Wedick did girls' cross country in middle school last year. Wedick reportedly finished third out of 55 runners at one meet. The thread linked to a 2017 Romper [blog post](https://archive.ph/ikNDU?ref=newbostonpost.com) written by the athlete's mother, Emily Wedick. Meanwhile, in a 2016 *Bangor Daily News* op-ed, Emily Wedick [wrote](https://archive.is/ad0RT?ref=newbostonpost.com) about how Violet already identified as a girl at five years old. The op-ed said Violet started showing signs of wanting to be a girl at just two years old. "Ever since the age of 2, our son wanted to wear dresses," she wrote. "When his little sister was born, he didn’t understand why friends and family sent dresses for her and not for him. He begged us to buy him one. We didn’t think much of it. He hadn’t really taken to dolls, and he loved cars, trains, construction and the color blue. He was, in every other way, a typical boy." Wedick isn't the only male transgender athlete to excel in Maine girls' high school sports in recent years. Two have won girls' track state titles. Soren Stark-Chessa, a male runner who identifies as a girl, won the Class C girls 800-meter [state championship in 2024](https://www.newbostonpost.com/transgender-maine-girls-track-athlete-wins-state-championship/), as NewBostonPost was first to report. Also, Katie Spencer, a male pole vaulter who identifies as a girl, won the [2025 Class B girls indoor pole vault state championship](https://www.newbostonpost.com/two-maine-transgender-athletes-receive-all-conference-honors-in-winter-sports/). Spencer cleared 10 feet, 6 inches. That was six inches higher than the second-place finisher. The win helped Greely High School win the girls' team state championship by one point. Maine schools let students compete on teams that match their self-selected gender identity. The Maine Principals’ Association refused to change its policy after the Trump administration [said it violated Title IX](https://apnews.com/article/e1f7232307fa400ac58d3471cd86b133?ref=newbostonpost.com) last year. The Trump administration [sued Maine](https://apnews.com/article/5b5c8d0022233fae5ec60efc9fa5394f?ref=newbostonpost.com) in April 2025\. It wants the state to stop male athletes from competing in girls' sports. Maine officials say the state’s Human Rights Act requires schools to let them play based on their self-selected gender identity. There was an attempt to put a question on the ballot to keep males out of girls' sports in Maine this year. However, the state Supreme Judicial Court [ruled in July](https://www.courts.maine.gov/courts/sjc/lawcourt/2026/26me059.pdf?ref=newbostonpost.com) that it fell 532 valid signatures short of the number needed to make the ballot.
