A Massachusetts U.S. House candidate posted a video on Instagram showing himself and others hitting a piñata made to look like an ICE agent.

Jonathan Paz, a Democrat running in Massachusetts’ 5th Congressional District, posted the video Sunday.

“My birthday wish this year: Abolish ICE! This agency has been ripping apart families well before the current administration, mine included. As always, we advocate for peaceful protest ✌️” Paz [wrote](https://www.instagram.com/reel/DZn2u7cRpUB/?ref=newbostonpost.com).

The video shows several people taking turns swinging at the piñata, which appears to wear sunglasses and a vest with “ICE” on it. It breaks open near the end.

Paz, a former Waltham city councilor, is challenging U.S. Rep. Katherine Clark, D-Mass., in the Democratic primary.

Clark, of Revere, serves as House minority whip, making her one of the highest-ranking Democrats in Congress.

Paz has made opposition to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement a central part of his campaign.

“At 14, I watched my father be detained and deported,” Paz’s campaign website [says](https://www.pazforthepeople.com/?ref=newbostonpost.com).

Paz’s campaign also criticizes Clark on ICE.

In a section called “The People’s Scorecard,” the campaign says Paz “will prioritize cutting all funding for ICE” and “supports disbanding the agency and returning immigration responsibilities to the Department of Labor.”

The same section says Clark “does not support defunding ICE” and “funds an agency that separates families, with only small reforms promised.”

Paz also called for abolishing ICE in a Progressive Massachusetts candidate questionnaire.

“I will vote to cut ICE’s funding entirely,” Paz [wrote](https://www.progressivemass.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Jonathan-Paz-2026-Congress.pdf?ref=newbostonpost.com). “We need to re-invest that money back into the people.”

Paz called ICE “a rogue agency operating outside the law.”

“When I say ‘Abolish ICE,’ I mean 4 things,” Paz wrote on his campaign website.

He listed investigating ICE agents, abolishing ICE as a federal agency, creating a new immigration system with “a humane pathway to citizenship” and redirecting ICE’s budget to schools, health care and housing.

“That money can go a long way,” Paz [told](https://www.wbur.org/news/2026/01/02/massachusetts-clark-congress-whip-challengers?ref=newbostonpost.com) WBUR. “Rather than tearing up our communities, it could actually do something to support working people who are struggling.”

Massachusetts Peace Action endorsed Paz earlier this month and said abolishing ICE gives him a clear contrast with Clark.

“Clark has not avowed support for abolishing ICE, providing a wedge issue between her and Paz that will win over many democratic primary voters,” the group [wrote](https://masspeaceaction.org/news/peace-voter/jonathan-paz-for-congress/2026/06/05/?ref=newbostonpost.com).
