U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrested a Jamaican man in Springfield, Massachusetts, who faces several pending child rape charges, according to federal officials.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security identified the man as Jermaine Oneil Thompson. DHS described Thompson as an illegal immigrant from Jamaica.

The arrest came as ICE conducted operations across the country over Labor Day weekend.

## Who Is Jermaine Oneil Thompson?

ICE arrested Thompson during an operation in Springfield, according to a [Sept. 8 Department of Homeland Security release](https://www.dhs.gov/news/2026/09/08/worst-worst-ice-arrests-murderers-pedophiles-rapists-and-drug-traffickers?ref=newbostonpost.com).

Federal officials did not provide Thompson’s age or say when or how he entered the United States.

DHS also did not say exactly where or when officers arrested him in Springfield.

## What Charges Does Jermaine Oneil Thompson Face?

According to DHS, Thompson faces two pending charges of aggravated rape of a child.

The agency also said authorities previously arrested him on five counts of rape of a child with force, one count of assault with intent to rape a child and one count of witness intimidation.

Those charges remain allegations. The DHS release did not say Thompson has been convicted on those charges or say how he pleaded.

Federal officials also did not identify the local police department involved in the criminal case or provide court dates or case numbers.

## ICE Announces Two Other Massachusetts Arrests

DHS included Thompson among three Massachusetts cases highlighted in its national roundup of ICE arrests.

The agency said ICE also arrested Aurelio Roldan-Roldan, an Ecuadorian illegal immigrant who was convicted in Bridgewater on two counts of rape of a child and a child pornography charge.

ICE also arrested Minh Duc Ngo Nguyen, a Vietnamese illegal immigrant convicted of armed robbery in Massachusetts, according to DHS.

The federal release did not provide additional details about where in Massachusetts officers arrested the two men.

## Homeland Security Secretary Praises ICE Arrests

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin praised ICE officers for making arrests during the holiday weekend.

“While Americans enjoyed time with loved ones, the patriots of ICE risked their lives to remove murderers, pedophiles, rapists, and other public safety threats from our communities,” Mullin said in the release. “Under President Trump, there is no sanctuary for illegal aliens. The men and women of ICE will not stop their record-setting pace of arresting and removing illegal aliens off our streets to Make America Safe Again.”

## How Does The Massachusetts PROTECT Act Affect ICE?

The Springfield arrest comes a little more than a month after Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey signed the [PROTECT Act](https://www.mass.gov/news/governor-healey-signs-protect-act-to-keep-ice-out-of-courthouses-schools-and-hospitals?ref=newbostonpost.com) on Aug. 5.

The law places new limits on civil immigration enforcement in Massachusetts.

Among other provisions, it restricts civil immigration arrests in schools, child care programs, nursing homes and certain areas of health care facilities unless federal officers have a judicial warrant or court order.

The law also restricts the use of state and local resources for civil immigration enforcement and generally prevents police from holding someone beyond the time the person should otherwise be released based only on an ICE detainer.

The Healey administration issued additional [PROTECT Act guidance](https://www.mass.gov/news/governor-healey-issues-protect-act-guidance-for-health-care-providers-employers-law-enforcement-and-state-agencies?ref=newbostonpost.com) on Sept. 8, the same day DHS announced Thompson’s arrest.

## Can Massachusetts Police Still Work With ICE?

The PROTECT Act deals primarily with civil immigration enforcement. It does not stop Massachusetts police from enforcing criminal laws.

State guidance says law enforcement officers may still make arrests pursuant to judicial warrants and cooperate with federal authorities in criminal investigations.

That distinction could matter in cases involving immigrants accused or convicted of serious crimes.

DHS did not say whether Massachusetts state or local police helped ICE arrest Thompson.

The agency also did not say where Thompson is now being held or when he could appear in immigration court.
