Republican candidate for treasurer Elizabeth Dionne seems to be trying to make former Cannabis Control Commission Chair Shannon O'Brien an issue in the 2026 treasurer's race, and is firing away at Treasurer Deb Goldberg in an attempt to do so.

Dionne defended O'Brien on Sunday on WCVB's "On the Record," calling her new [trio of complaints](https://www.statehousenews.com/news/regulatedindustries/cannabis/obrien-revives-goldberg-feud-with-whistleblower-claim/article%5F1caec7a3-f4c4-4540-b038-0a5d2deda321.html?ref=newbostonpost.com) against Goldberg "really important."

Dionne called on Goldberg to be "held accountable" for "false" claims against the former chairwoman and for "nine years of chaos and failed promises" at the CCC, an agency that sits outside the state Treasury.

"Our opponent has made it clear she is either grossly incompetent or incapable of telling the truth. She has run an exclusively negative campaign that barely deserves a response," Goldberg campaign spokesperson Chris Keohan said in response to Dionne's comments. "Instead of continuing her disgraceful tactics we suggest she actually read up on what the role and responsibilities are of the Treasurer because she has proven throughout this campaign she has no clue."

Dionne also said Sunday that voters should take away from the O'Brien "controversy" that "we have a 12-year incumbent who thinks that she's untouchable. She's acting entitled. We have her on tape saying that she would like to beat Bob Crane's 27-year record. So she wants to be in office for another 16 years."

Keohan said Goldberg's comment about Crane's record "is a throwaway line and a joke the Treasurer uses often. Because she respects Treasurer Crane so much and loves the work she's doing."

To beat Crane's record, Goldberg would have to serve past 2042, when she'll be 88 years old.

Dionne also claimed that Goldberg "is refusing" to debate her; Keohan said Goldberg's campaign has received one request from WGBH, and that "we haven't yet said no. We are, however, insisting on formats where blatant lies will be called out."
