# Feds Charge Braintree Planning Board Clerk With Taking $235,000 From Church

Federal prosecutors say a longtime Braintree Planning Board member diverted about $235,000 from an unnamed Massachusetts church.

Prosecutors [charged](https://www.docketalarm.com/cases/Massachusetts%5FDistrict%5FCourt/1--26-cr-10206/USA%5Fv.%5FMikami/?ref=newbostonpost.com) Darryl K. Mikami with two counts of wire fraud on Wednesday, July 22.

They filed the case in U.S. District Court in Boston. U.S. District Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV will hear the case.

Prosecutors say Mikami helped manage the church’s investments.

He managed an investment account, told church members how the investments performed, and sent earnings to the church’s assistant treasurer.

The account held donor-restricted money. Donors gave that money for specific church purposes.

The filing says Mikami had a legal duty to manage the money for the church’s benefit.

It also says Mikami and his family helped create one of the church’s special funds.

Prosecutors say Mikami diverted about $235,000 from the church’s restricted money.

The Town of Braintree currently [lists](https://braintreema.gov/376/Planning-Board?ref=newbostonpost.com) Mikami as clerk of its Planning Board.

Town records show Mikami [served](https://www.wickedlocal.com/story/braintree-forum/2009/04/07/mikami-represents-planning-board-on/39647540007/?ref=newbostonpost.com) on the board as far back as January 2009.

The Planning Board reviews development plans, holds hearings on zoning changes, and weighs requests for special permits.

Mikami also [represents](https://braintreema.gov/328/Community-Preservation-Committee-CPC?ref=newbostonpost.com) the Planning Board on Braintree’s Community Preservation Committee.

That committee reviews requests to use town money for open space, historic work, outdoor recreation, and housing.

The federal charges do not involve Braintree or town money.

A lawyer entered the case for Mikami on Thursday. Court records did not list his next hearing as of Friday morning.

Wire fraud can bring up to 20 years in prison.

Braintree’s next Planning Board meeting will take place August 18\. The town still listed Mikami in both town positions as of Friday morning.
