Boston Public Library has canceled a transgender-focused Pride period event after it drew backlash online.

The library’s event page for “Mass NOW: Trans Period Pride” now [says](https://bpl.bibliocommons.com/events/69fcd5d2caf93436005a66eb?ref=newbostonpost.com), “This event is canceled.”

Mass NOW had planned to hold its third annual Trans Period Pride Consciousness Raising event at the Boston Public Library Central Library in Copley Square on Wednesday, June 17.

The library’s event listing said Mass NOW would host the event “with support from the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQIA2S+ Advancement.”

The listing said attendees would “learn about trans experiences with menstruation” from the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition and take part in “a group discussion to connect and share,” as NewBostonPost [previously reported](https://www.newbostonpost.com/boston-public-library-trans-period-pride-event-mayor-wu-lgbtq-office/).

The library listed the event for adults and described it as a “Community Meeting Hosted by Mass NOW.”

The library’s cancellation notice does not say why the event got canceled.

Mass NOW’s event page still listed the event as upcoming as of Sunday, May 31\. However, it now says the location is to be announced.

“Join us for our third annual Trans Period Pride Consciousness Raising at the Boston Public Library!” Mass NOW’s event listing [says](https://www.massnow.org/events/trans-period-pride-2026?ref=newbostonpost.com). “We’ll be learning about trans experiences with menstruation from the MA Trans Political Coalition and hold a group discussion to connect and share.”

“This event is free to attend, and both members of the Trans community and their allies are welcome to attend,” the listing adds. “Catering is included!”

Mass Daily News [reported](https://www.massdailynews.com/2026/05/31/wu-funded-trans-period-pride-organizer-breaks-silence-calls?ref=newbostonpost.com) that Mass NOW executive director Sasha Goodfriend defended the event after criticism.

Goodfriend gave a statement to Them, an LGBT publication owned by Condé Nast.

“At a time when extremist voices are trying to shame, erase, and isolate transgender people, events like Trans Period Pride are about building community, dignity, and access to essential care,” Goodfriend [told](https://www.them.us/story/boston-period-event-mayor-michelle-wu-right-wing-backlash?ref=newbostonpost.com) Them. “Menstrual equity is a public health issue that affects anyone who menstruates, and no one should be excluded from that conversation because of their gender identity.

“The backlash only reinforces why this work — and visible solidarity — is so important,” she added.

Goodfriend’s statement came after stories on the topic went viral.

The cancellation comes as Boston Public Library prepares to hold Pride Month programming in June, including 19 Drag Queen Story Time events, as NewBostonPost [previously reported](https://www.newbostonpost.com/boston-public-library-to-host-19-drag-queen-story-time-events-for-kids-during-pride-month/).

The canceled event reflects the Boston view that men can get periods. Six Boston Public Library branches offer tampons in men’s bathrooms, as NewBostonPost has [reported](https://www.newbostonpost.com/boston-tampons-mens-bathroom/).
